Summer in
Arizona can be a very nerve-wracking ti
me
for many pets and their owners. Loud noises like fireworks in July and
thunder from monsoon storms frighten many animals. Every owner has heard
of the
increase in stray animals following the Fourth of July due to the fear the noise
inspires in pets. It is not unheard of for a dog to go through a sliding
glass door or to jump a 6 foot tall wall to try and escape from the loud noises.
So, what should pet owners do?
1)
Be aware of your pets fears. Knowing that
your dog if fearful of thunderstorms or fireworks is the first step in
preventing problems.
2)
Give
your dog a place to hide. Many dogs like dark, quiet places to hide
and often find comfort in these places.
3)
Consult
a dog trainer or behaviorist.
Many dog trainers and animal behaviorists can work with you and your dog to
desensitize them to the sounds and hopefully alleviate much of their fear.
4)
In severe cases, some dogs need
veterinary intervention. There are many sedatives available to "take the
edge off." If you feel that your pet needs veterinary help, please contact
your veterinary hospital to schedule an exam and discuss the various types of
medications.
ALWAYS
BE SURE TO HAVE PROPER ID
ENTIFICATION ON YOUR PET!
Lets just
suppose the worst happens, and your dog jumps the wall or somehow gets loose.
Having a clearly engraved tag with your contact information is imperative to
getting your pet returned to you. Pima County Liscense tags are helpful,
but it is often confusing for whoever found your dog to get in contact with you.
Microchips are also helpful, and all pets with microchips should also be wearing
the yellow tag with the microchip number clearly printed on it.
